When sketch shows really work, they are fantastic. Anything less than that, and they can be a bit of a damp squib.
So perhaps it was a bit harsh of the BBC to place Ronni Ancona and Co (BBC 1, 9.30pm) on the box straight after that sure-fire ribtickler Have I Got News For You.
That's not to say I don't think it's any good, just that it will take a little getting used to.
What stopped it from being a complete write-off was the fact that Ancona has cleverly mixed in amusing skits on celebrities while at the same time introducing us to her own characters.
Kate Moss and her 'husband' Pete, Amy Whinehouse and Nicole Kidman all got the Ancona treatment - although the funniest of the lot was Demi Moore. Ancona cleverly used the fact that Moore seems to get younger with age to great effect - presenting a biography of the star which, at the end, used a child in a 'clip of Demi' in her most recent film.
So yes, I did laugh. Perhaps I'm guilty of forgetting that when I roll around laughing at Catherine Tate, that it's largely because I'm familar with her characters, ditto Little Britain. And perhaps that means people were a bit harsh on Harry Enfield with his sketch series which ended last week.
Only time will tell - but it's good to see the Beeb trying someting new, comedy wise, in prime time.
