Britain's Got Paul Potts - and Piers on the beatbox (with video)
Britain's Got Talent picked its winner last night. In the haze of an early-evening hangover thanks to my Godson's christening earlier in the day, I feared that Britain was going to get Bessie.
In fact, at one point I was sure of it. Just how can anyone vote for a one-girl sing-a-long-a-musical act? If I'm honest, I wasn't mad keen on Paul Potts either.
There's no denying he has talent - but does the world really need another opera singer turning out albums in time for Mother's Day?
But when you hear his story - and the fact Britain's Got Talent has only been on for a week so its fair to assume his history hasn't had the Max Clifford spin - you can't help but think the right man won.
There was no faulting his performance. I'd have been pleased to see Connie, the six-year-old without her front teeth but with an angelic voice, win - and I do suspect she'll be turning out a Christmas carol CD before the end of the year.
The fancy-act bartenders too. No Tom Cruises were they, but they were entertaining. Ditto the dancing street crew from Coventry. Even the mad guy with the puppet who sings Michael Jackson songs was on form.
Perhaps the directors of the Royal Variety will find places for more them on the show - they certainly provided a better night's entertainment than any Royal Variety performance I can remember.
But, from a televisual point of view, perhaps the biggest winner from this series was the digital satellite surfer - because the 'behind the scenes' show on ITV 2 was actually worth watching.
Presented by Stephen Mulhern, a former Royal Variety performer himself, the material put on the gogglebox has been worth watching. It hasn't just been extended interviews with the losers, or 'this is how we do this' type stuff.
No, they had Piers doing beatbox. Say what you like about the man, but he's not afraid to have a go at what he's slating. Can't wait for next year's!
