Aren't panel quiz shows great?

By Remote Control on Jun 30, 07 11:06 AM

It finally seems to be happening. TV producers have cottoned on to a genre of show which is cheap to make and which people won't get bored of.

Yes, hopefully the reality TV genre is going to die quietly, while all attention is placed on: TV quiz panel shows.

Of course, we've had Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and They Think It's All Over for years, and in the case of the first two, they're still going strong.

But the new pretenders in town are worth checking out - and making weekend telly really worth staying in for (well, almost).

First out of the blocks, last night, was the latest in the new series of 8 out of 10 cats (C4, 9.30pm). Presented by Jimmy Carr, it's rather like the ASBO offspring of Family Fortunes.

Two teams of celebs have to try and work their way through various statistical rounds, although the amount of time they spend ripping the subject matter to pieces means they don't get through that much. Picking the likes of Gok Wan and Joan Rivers as guests ensures everything goes a bit wrong - in a funny way.

On to tonight and Would I Lie to You? (BBC 1, 9.55pm). Lets face it, Angus Deayton was born to present panel quizzes, and despite losing the job on Have I Got News For You (that's hookers and cocaine for you) he was always going to make a comeback.

Again, two teams of three celebs have to try and work out whether statements made by other teams are true of false. Saw it for the first time last weekend and have not laughed so much in ages - the beauty of it being that some of Deayton's gags are so risque that they shock the comedians taking part. Where else will you hear celebs debating whether Pat Butcher is a member of the British Abseil Association and has climbed down the face of Mount Rushmore?

And finally (and there's a clue to the next programme), tomorrow night sees the second in the series of News Knight, presented by Sir Trevor himself (ITV 1, 10pm). It's him versus three comedians as they wade through the week's news. The trailer proclaims it is Sir Trev released from the script - but I'm not so sure, because he still seems to be reading off the autocue - a very funny autocue though.

It should also be the vehicle which helps hilarious comedian Marcus Brigstoke make the big time for good. Last week's was hilarious - never thought I'd hear Sir Trev say things like 'racist and dead' or 'Saudis do the funniest things.' They were two of the titles from the rounds. Great viewing and great to see ITV trying something new.
