Saturday's telly picks...

By Remote Control on Jun 2, 07 12:08 PM

Sure signs you are getting old number 1: When films you remember going to see at the cinema when you were a teenager end up on the Saturday afternoon slot on ITV1.

That means, by process of elimination, the said film has been released on to video, then shown on Sky Movies, then shown on ITV in primetime at least once, then on ITV 2, 3, or 4 at least once (on each) and also on the late-night slot on ITV1.

So there you go, I'm getting old. Death Becomes Her (ITV 1, 3.30pm) is on this afternoon. I remember seeing at the UCI when I was 13, one of the first films I saw with my mates - not long afterwards I remember being scared silly as I tried to get into In The Line of Fire, which was a 15 - I was not, at the time, 15.

Today probably isn't the day to watch telly if you want to avoid feeling old. Especially if you're a Beatles fan. The celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Sgt Pepper album appear to have gone on all week, but Sgt Pepper - It was 40 years ago today (BBC 2, 10.45pm) is certainly worth checking out.

The engineer involved on the album, Geoff Emerick, goes back into the studio with some of today's biggest artists - Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight and Bryan Adams are among them - to create new versions of the classic tracks. The result is a mixed bag, but a fun tribute all the same.

Keeping the old theme going is Have I Got News For You (BBC 1, 10.15pm) which is this week hosted by Moira Stuart - the slick news reader the Beeb decided was too old to sit behind a desk on a Sunday morning and read the news during Andrew Marr's Sunday AM programme. There's no doubt the decision had the nation outraged, and sticking her in the hotseat for Have I Got News For You is a cracking move by the programme's producers. From seeing her on other shows, she has a cracking sense of humour but will keep the lads in check. It's also the last in the series of Have I Got News For You, too.

Over on ITV 1, it will be Simon Cowell who will be feeling old. This Is Your Life (9.25pm) returns for a one-off special as Sir Trevor McDonald turns up in America to give the red book to pop's Mr Nasty. Apparently it is the second time he has received the red book, but I get the impression this programme might be more about test-driving Sir Trev in the format.

I think it should work - and if they line up decent celebs like Cowell - ie interesting ones - then there might life in the old red book series yet.

All in all a good night on TV, and I haven't even mentioned Any Dream Will Do. Because, really, I'm not THAT old yet!
