Friday's telly picks (with video)

Posted by Remote Control on June 29, 2007 2:27 AM |

tHE name Jason Manford may ring a bell, particularly if you know the Liverpool comedy circuity at all.

He's a rather witty Manc who has become very popular in the city - and will probably repeat that nationwide thanks to his latest gig, as one of the stars of 8 out of 10 Cats (C4 9.30pm)

I always rate a comedy programme more highly if they take the plunge and try someone new - that's why Mock The Week is so good, because as well as the trusted comedians, they pitch in new ones like Russell Howard into the mix too.

And to be honest, I'm not mad keen on Dave Spikey - so Jason's arrival on 8 out of 10 Cats is excellent. It's described as an irreverent panel quiz show, though it's role in life is much more important than that - reminding us that there is normality out there, sandwiched as it is between the two Friday night doses of Big Brother.

If Big Brother, which I'm not backing yet because there are still too many in the house, doesn't leave you wondering about humanity, then Wags off Fags (ITV 1, 8pm) will. 'Model' Jodie Marsh and actor Lucy Pargeter undergo treatment to quit smoking. This programme lasts half an hour. Whether it works, we don't know.

Amusement should abound tonight on Airline (ITV 1, 8.30pm) - no I'm not drunk - when the Hollyoaks crew roll up at Luton Airport. I'm half-hoping Justin ends up having to bed down on the airport floor for the night, but then I remembered he's an actor, and is rich, whereas I am not.

And finally, and much more serious, is Fearne Cotton's interview with Princes William Harry (BBC 1, 7.30pm) ahead of the Diana concert tomorrow. Fearne's taken some flak for being too lightweight, but to be honest, who is going to get more out of two red-blooded male princes? Curly-haired Jeremy Paxman, or blonde, stuning, beautiful Fearne? I rest my case. If you insist on the the more heavyweight interview, then the American version can be watched here.
