Head down to Hollyoaks

Posted by Remote Control on July 11, 2007 10:55 AM |

If it wasn't for the facts that a) it would be boring and b) you'd stop reading as a result, I'd probably highlight Hollyoaks on this blog every night.

At this point, people will scoff and jeer and accuse me of being daft, but I'm used to that. I was once one of the biggest champions of Neighbours - and those who listened to me and watched it appreciated for the simple escapism it was - until it went off the boil (ie Karl Kennedy stopped being a doctor).

But that's not the reason I like Hollyoaks. Sure, it used to be about escapism, with beautiful girls and boys falling out with each other and scripts designed to ensure as much flesh was one show at one time as is decently allowable at 6.30pm.

And when it moved to a five-times-a-week schedule, it could have fallen down the Emmerdale trap of naff acting, bad scripts and increasingly flimsy plotlines.

But, strangely, the quality of the storylines improved. Sure, some are far-fetched (gangsters in a village etc) but many are just very well acted out and written versions of every-day issues - Max's battle to get his kid brother back from social services, and Jess's battle with the credit cards, for example.

In tonight's episode (Channel 4, 6.30pm) they are dealing with the everyday issue of weddings. Or, to be more precise, a double wedding from the chav McQueen family.

This will rumble on all week - expect fireworks tomorrow night (you can see that episode in advance on E4 tonight at 7pm) and on Friday - but tonight is all about the stag party. If you sat through the dullard Eastenders attempt at a stag party, fear not, it's nothing like that. It's good fun, but also sets the scene for one of the weddings to go very wrong.

The great thing about Hollyoaks is that, while one plot comes to the boil, another is simmering just behind it. That's what's going on now - I'd say get on board asap!
