Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip arrives in UK (with video)

Posted by Remote Control on July 29, 2007 10:46 PM |

If you are one of those people who staunchly refuses to even let a Freeview box into the house because you believe all the televisual entertainment you require comes through the aerial on five regular channels, then I suggest you check what time The Simpsons move is showing at Fact tonight.

That's right, there's chuff all to entertain this evening. So it's into the bowels of the Sky box to see what comes up - and for me, the highlight has to be
Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip (More 4, 11.05pm).

Thanks to the fact that it is written by multi-Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing), it received massive attention when it launched in the States, which perhaps makes it a surprise that it is debuting on Channel 4's more grown-up version of E4.

Described variously as daring, ingenious and comedic, above all is a drama that goes behind the scenes to expose the mayhem of producing a flagship series on a major TV network.

It's a world of politics and romances, and a delicate balance between creatives, on-air personalities and network execs. And it stars Matthew Perry, who appears, with this, to stand a chance at becoming the one star of Friends who successfully graduate from comedy to drama without the need to point at him and say his Central Perk character's name.

Tonight's episode is a repeat of Thursday's 10pm showing, and in it Savvy new network president Jordan McDeere (Amanda Peet) inherits a massive public relations problem on the series – on her very first day of work – when executive producer Wes Mendell (JUDD HIRSCH) sparks a media frenzy by having an on-air meltdown during a live broadcast.

Jordan has to scramble to make things right by hiring back two formerly prized employees, Matt Albie (Matthew Perry) and Danny Tripp (Bradley Whitford), as the new executive producers of her network's flagship programme. It promises to be one of the highlights of the summer.

Also tonight:

The Alan Ball Memorial Cup: England XI v The World XI (Sky One, 7pm): Charity football match in memory of the former Everton and England star, but rather randomly played in Milton Keynes (I'm pretty sure Goodison Park is empty tonight). Presented by Colin Murray, the match will be broadcast live on Sky One. Turning out to represent England are Jamie Redknapp, Paul Ince, Peter Shilton, Matt Le Tissier, Graeme Le Saux, Paul Merson and Les Ferdinand.
They will be joined by actor Danny Dyer, Life on Mars’ John Simm, broadcaster Angus Deayton, rugby world cup winners Ben Cohen and Matt Dawson, Olympic Gold Medallist Darren Campbell, Radio 1’s JK, musician David Gray, State of Play’s David Morrissey and the boys from McFly. The team will be managed by Peter Reid .
Lining up for The World against England are Italia 90 legend Toto Schillaci, Serie A striker Giuseppe Signori, German heroes Stephan Freund and Matthias Sammer, ex-Scotland Captain Richard Gough, former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland great John Aldridge and Everton and Wales‘ keeper Neville Southall. Taking charge of the international stars is Lothar Matthaus (Germany’s most capped player and World Cup winning Captain) who will lead out a team including Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno, Welsh athletes Iwan Thomas and Jamie Baulch and Scotland Rugby ace Kenny Logan.
Random in the extreme - but these matches are always good fun.

CSI Double Bill (FIVE US, 8pm): The best of the CSI franchises gets turned out most evenings on both Living and Five, and I think tonight Five's US offspring has the edge with a double bill following the Las Vegas team as they investigate a series of attacks in supermarkets.
