'classic' 'british' and 'sitcom'

Posted by Remote Control on October 30, 2007 11:15 PM

Three words that, if ever in the same sentence, tell you one thing: The programme in question was crap.

Which is why this news scares me.

I mean, how about investing in something new? Arguing that reduced budgets means more repeats is one thing, but using whatever cash you do have to reheat a naff formula for the 21st century is madness.

Having the Big Mac back doesn't really appeal

Posted by Remote Control on October 28, 2007 6:03 AM

The big television news story of the week was, apparently, the fact that Sir Trevor McDonald was returning to present News at Ten, coupled with the fact that News At Ten itself was returning.

Good gameshows v bad gameshows

Posted by Remote Control on October 27, 2007 12:59 AM

EARLIER this week I had my first adventure with daytime TV for quite a while. Because I was sick in bed, with only four channels to go at, the choice was pretty limited which is why I ended up stumbling across Dirty Rotten Cheat (BBC 1, weekdays, 2.35pm). As quiz shows go, it's the absolute pits. And that's even before you've factored in Brian Conley as host.

Laughing all the way to the weekend (with video links)

Bad week? Struggling to smile? Feel like it's been five very long days in the office? Then fear not, because once again, Friday night is comedy night.

It's quite a while since I've looked at a terrestrial TV schedule and thought how much it is worth staying in for. Which seeing as I'm skint at the moment, is just as well.

Tonight's telly: The Alan Johnston Story

Posted by Remote Control on October 25, 2007 2:14 PM

I was off sick yesterday. So I watched a lot of day time television. And on BBC1, one promo punctuated the programmes more than any other: Panorama: The Alan Johnston Story (9pm, BBC1).

If ever a documentary warranted an hour of prime-time television, it is this one. The Gaza correspondent for the BBC has been remarkably quiet since his release from capture 114 days after beind kidnapped by militant jihadists in Gaza.

Great comedy and David Platt (with video)

FOR the next fortnight, there's a great reason to ignore commonsense and go to bed early on a schoolnight. It's called The Comedy Lab (11.05pm).

It's the Cadbury Gorilla top 10 remixes!

Posted by Remote Control on October 21, 2007 11:22 AM

LAST MONTH, Cadbury's new Phil Collins Gorilla advert went into the World's Best Adverts section on Remote Control.

As viral adverts go, it's been huge - the downside being that it has propelled Phil Collins's 'In the Air Tonight' back into the Top 20 for the first time in a couple of decades.

Could TV help solve the Madeleine McCann case?

Posted by Remote Control on October 18, 2007 12:17 AM

It's been nearly 170 days since Madeleine McCann went missing. Every twist, turn and development has been scrutinised in this country, while in Portugal, slowly but surely the allegations against Kate and Gerry McCann have become more lurid.

The media was quick off the mark to realise the level of interest in the case - it's arguable that the profile the case was given has ensured that the Portuguese police haven't been able to just file it away. Perhaps it is only because of the intense media scrutiny that new officers are involved in the case rather than the, how shall we put this, 'murky' ones who obviously weren't doing their jobs properly in the first place.

Thomas the Tank Engine singing to James Blunt?

Only on YouTube ... but it concerns me. Is there a sub plot to the island's railway I haven't picked up on?

Colour like no other?

Posted by me on October 16, 2007 11:04 PM

It's been watched millions of times on the telly, has become so viral that in every other sense of the word it would require a vaccine and is arguably one of the most creative adverts on the box at the moment.

I'm talking about the newSony Bravia advert. Using Playdoh to create bunnies dancing around a city is great to watch. But does it make you want to buy their television sets? Or am I missing the point?

Michael Fish and the Hurricanes

Will Michael Fish ever live down his error of 20 years ago? Not with this clip still lurking around...

Spooks is back (with video)

Posted by Remote Control on October 16, 2007 12:18 PM

Of all the buzz phrases those working in telly land use, the one they seem to strive to say the most is 'appointment to view' television.

It appears to be the Holy Grail for TV programmers, all seeking for that one programme which will knock the socks of the ever increasing number of rivals they face.

Big football games do it, and it's a safe bet the Rugby on Saturday night will do to.

More sport - yes, more sport!

Posted by Remote Control on October 15, 2007 8:04 PM

Isn't sport brilliant? I mean, wouldn't conversations be short if we didn't have sport to talk about?!?

After all, the football looks to be back on track for England, the English rugby union team have done the business so far, and the English cricket team have provided the counter-balance by returning to type this weekend.
