I achieved, last weekend, something which many blokes consider to be nigh on impossible: I got my girlfriend to watch, and enjoy, the football.
Not a whole 90 minutes - we've tried that, and it almost worked, a 3-3 draw between Preston and Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. All was going well till Preston got their third equaliser of the night, I jumped up and hugged the wrong woman.
No, I mean the Saturday highlights programme. Seeing as she isn't in her 30s yet, and therefore not in the social age group which finds Gary Lineker attractive, I owe this success to another man: Jeff Stelling.
Yes, if you want to get your girlfriend hooked on football, then may I suggest Sky Sports Gillette Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 12 noon) this weekend? Admittedly, I struck lucky last weekend, what with commentator-turned-jack-in-the-box Chris Kamara at the Portsmouth v Reading game - a game with so many goals he forgot the scoreline.
And had it been this weekend I'd debuted Soccer Saturday on the other half, it's possible it wouldn't have worked. With only one Premiership game today, the focus is very much on the football league, which while guaranteeing amusement as experts on the Premier League grapple with knowledge of the lower leagues, does proably mean this weekend is one for the purists.
So to help you out, I've compiled a few 'best bits' from Soccer Saturday. We've got Jeff Stelling dancing, a rather random Jeff Stelling swearing clip, a great one of Phil Thompson getting it very wrong about Michael Chopra and the best of all, Chris Kamara going bonkers.
Good luck!
