POSH SPICE is one of those famous people I'd dearly love to hate. Largely due to the things I've read about her. But then I hear an interview with her and realise that she's very good at laughing at herself, is generally quite genuine, and if indeed some of the stories about her excesses are true, it's because she's a little potty, rather than just down-right self-indulgent
But there's no doubting the fact she has a very good publicity machine helping her make the right moves - though I suspect she may one day regret reuniting with the Spice Girls. Girl Power had a place in 1996, but in 2007, with a decade added on to the age of the Spice Girls, hearing twenty and thirty-something mothers shrieking 'girl power' feels more like stumbling into a Notting Hill life coach class than witnessing a cultural revolution.
However, we're here to talk TV, not music, so swiftly on to tonight's choice. Much as it pains me to pick a programme which goes against Have I Got News For You (BBC 1, 9pm) Channel 4's brilliant trail for tonight's Ugly Betty(C4, 9pm) has forced me into a corner.
If you haven't picked up Ugly Betty since the end of the last season, not much has moved on. In fact, it's largely worth ignoring as Betty continues her quest to find love, Marc, the rich sex-mad-but-heart-of-gold-really editor of the magazine Mode is still trying to get to grips with it while his fashion editor Wilhelmina Slater (who believes she should be editor) continues to try and get to grips with his dad, Bradford (aka Jim Robinson from Neighbours) by marrying him. Tonight.
Cue Posh Spice's entrance. She's a wedding guest, and appears to have landed herself a cameo which brings with it some great oneliners. And she hasn't had to put on one of those dreadful English accents which Friends (C4, E4 repeated at least several times a day) seemed to think were essential either.
Whether it's enough to win over the American public, which is something she apparently wants to do, I don't know, and I don't care. What I do know, though, is that it is set to be the best comedy cameo of the year. And, of course, Have I Got News For You is repeateded on both Saturday and Monday....
