Dancing prisoners and Michelle Heaton

Posted by Remote Control on January 2, 2008 9:12 AM |

Way back at the start of time, well, when this blog got going, one of the first videos I nicked off YouTube was this one

I'm not going to claim credit for finding it - about three million people got there before me. If you can't watch Flash-enabled things on your computer (in which case, you're probably set near me in the office) then here's the story: Prison in the Philippines has brought new meaning to Jailhouse Rock. Bascially, he occupies the minds of his maximum-sceurity prisoners by making them learn the dance routines to things like Thriller.

And someone filmed it. It went on YouTube. The rest is history. As documented by First Cut: Murderers on the Dance Floor (C4, 12.10am - as in first thing Thursday morning). But this documentary isn't just a cheap excuse to fill an hour with the background to this YouTube video. It's much more than that. It explores the cult-style relationship the governor has with his prisoners, some of whom even have his name tattoed on them. Mad, certainly. But not as mad as showing this so late at night.

A little bit earlier, and more shocking than amusing, is The Truth about Binge Drinking (ITV1, 9pm). Remember last year when Louise Redknapp battled down to Size Zero? Well, Michelle Heaton, the old Liberty X singer basically spends a month binge-drinking to the maximum to see the affects on her body. The results are quite stark and enough to make you stick to a new year healthy-eating-and-drinking diet. The affects of alcohol on singing aren't explored, but it's a safe bet she wasn't any worse than when sober.
