Russell Brand and Paul Merton

Posted by Remote Control on January 25, 2008 5:44 PM |

Perhaps it's the power of this blog. Or the ability of this blog to state the bloody obvious when it comes to bemoaning what's lacking in the TV schedules.

Having berated how poor the comedy offering on TV is - I even found myself laughing at My Family the other night - there's actually some good, 'live' comedy starting to finally creep into the schedules.

Admittedly, exhibit A is a one-off - Comedy Live Presents (C4, 10pm). It's a Russell Brand vehicle, and regardless of what you think of him, there's no denying his use of the English language makes him a very watchable-type chap when he's in full flow. Combing known comedy stars with some up-and-coming ones, this hour-long show is hopefully something Channel 4 will develop.

Exhibit B, meanwhile, is even more promising. Thank God You're Here (Sat, 10.05pm, ITV 1) is a good example of how ITV is becoming a bit more daring up Michael Grade. Paul Merton hosts what is an incredibly amusing improvised sketch show, with a different group of celebrites, including comedians, turning up each week and really having to think on their feet.

Tonight, Southport's Lee Mack, Jennie McAlpine (Fizz from Corrie) Phil Nichol and Adam Buxton are Merton's buddies for this episode. If it's half as good as last week's it'll be a belter. Watch it, support it, make sure ITV recommission it.
