Gail Platt, mum from hell; David Platt, storyline genius

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again. There is one star, and one star only in Coronation Street. Not the lass from Hear'Say, or indeed Jack Duckworth. A different Jack, Jack Shepherd, who plays David Platt.

Thanks to great scripts, and plots which are believable yet gripping, David Platt has become the star of the show. So I was quite disturbed when I switched on the other night to hear Audrey Roberts saying of her grandson "He seems to have calmed down. At least he's not giving kiddies drugs, sending messages from the other side or taking potshots from the factory roof with an air rifle."

While it rather neatly summed up six months in the life of Weatherfield's most dysfunctional yet amusing teenager, it did leave me worried that the Corrie writers were taking David off the boil. Fortunatley not. As this next week will prove.

And it is all his horse-face mum Gail Platt's fault. David, having switched his attention from mailing Christmas Greetings from the next life to more normal teenage pursuits, ie getting laid, will find out this week that the subject of his affections has got pregnant, and is having a termination. Gail, he then finds out, is in on the termination. So David does what every teenager would do, and what every soap fan would do if they were stood next to Gail Platt at the top of the stairs: He pushes her down them.

David will then run off for a bit, fearing Gail is dead (sadly not - tell the glue factory to stand down) but it is another chance for Demonic David to shine. In 99% of teen actors, his expressions, his voice, his lines would all be a little too much to be realistic. But when played by this actor. 9/10 for Corrie this week, one point deducted for not completing the job on Gail Platt.
