Five to watch this week...
The X-Factor's back, Spooks has got a Saved by the Bell "new class" and Jeff Stelling is ready to keep Saturday's kicking on the football front. Here is Remote Control's five to watch this week...
1. Olympics 2008 (Every night, 7pm, BBC 1): I've already gone passed Olympics overload and the games are still only three days old. But still, Gabby Logan offering a one-hour wrap of everything that has gone on is just about doable. On Monday, they should have highlights of wonderkid Tom Daley on the diving board. I shall blog more about the overall Olympics in the next couple of days.
2. The Secret Millionaire (Tuesday, 9pm, Channel 4): I feel ashamed for dismissing this as one of those "Back to the Floor" type ego-trips for the millionaires involved when the first series aired, but I was proved wrong. On Tuesday, Kavita Oberoi, a millionaire who I've never heard of before, goes to Ladywood in Birmingham to find out what life is like in one of Birmingham's most deprived areas. She then sets about doing some good.
3. The Visit (Wednesday, 10.45pm, BBC 1): Final part of this excellent sitcom on Wednesday. Set in a prison waiting room, the writing has had to be really sharp throughout because of the lack of visual distractions. Characters have had to be developed quickly, relationships set out and so on. And it's done the lot. No doubt it'll surface on Dave in a few weeks but it is exceptional.
4.Soccer Saturday (Saturday, 3pm, Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports News). Oh yes. Say what you like about Sky's monopoly on sport but you can't deny they continue to raise the bar with football coverage. Just compare how it covers a Premier League game to how Setanta does it. And it's coverage of games as they happen, from all leagues, on a Saturday afternoon has yet to be surpassed. That's largely down to the way Jeff Stelling delivers stats and figures at the drop of a hat, while also refusing to let his team of ex-professionals turned mediocre pundits in the studio take themselves too seriously. Welcome back.
5. The X-Factor (Saturday, ITV 1, 7.30pm): Top marks if you can name last year's X-Factor winner within the next five seconds - I sure as hell can't. But then the fun of X-Factor for most of us isn't the winner, it's the auditions. And for the next few Saturdays, it's the auditions which make the X-Factor required viewing. Of course, there's the added dimension of Sharon Osbourne being replaced by Cheryl Cole. Well, at least Cheryl Cole has prior experience of these talent shows - Girls Aloud were born out of Popstars: The Rivals - which is more than can be said for Danni Minogue, who for some reason is once again on the panel
And new to our screens this week:Spooks: Code 9 (Sunday, BBC3, 9pm; August 11, BBC 3, 10.30pm): For Queen, For Country, For Kicks is the strapline to this Spooks spinoff. Hollyoaks meets Spooks in 2013 by the look of things. Let's see....
